FDA Registration Is Not Enough: What Else You Need for the US Market

Many exporters think FDA registration is all they need. In reality, it is only the first step in a multi-layered compliance process.

FDA food facility registration is a critical step, but it is only a directory entry — it does not grant approval, certification, or permission to sell. Many exporters mistakenly believe that registration alone makes them compliant.

What Registration Actually Is

Registration tells FDA your facility exists and intends to export food to the US. It does not verify food quality and does not mean your products are FDA-approved.

FSVP and Importer Responsibility

Under US law, the importer must verify through the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) that foreign suppliers meet US standards. If you do not understand FSVP requirements, importers may refuse to buy from you.

Multiple Compliance Layers

Beyond registration, you may need proper labeling, Prior Notice filings, a food safety plan, allergen declarations, and additional FDA requirements depending on your product category. Each layer you miss can cause delays at the port.
