FDA has tightened its verification of the DUNS number used as the Unique Facility Identifier (UFI) during food facility registration. Facilities with incorrect, incomplete, or unverifiable DUNS numbers are seeing their registrations cancelled without warning.
Why DUNS Matters
The DUNS number is a 9-digit identifier issued by Dun and Bradstreet that the FDA uses to verify facility identity. FDA now automatically cross-checks this number against the D&B database during both initial registration and biennial renewal.
Cancelled Registrations
When a DUNS number does not match, FDA can cancel the registration without prior notice. This means your shipments will be detained at US ports of entry.
Importers Are Verifying Too
US importers are now independently verifying their foreign suppliers DUNS numbers as part of supply chain due diligence. An incorrect DUNS could cost you a buyer.
The 30-Day Window
