Which facilities need registration?

Domestic and foreign facilities that manufacture, process, pack or hold food for human or animal consumption in the United States generally must register unless an exemption applies. Farms, restaurants, retail food establishments and other categories in 21 CFR 1.226 may be exempt. A trader or broker does not need facility registration solely because it trades food. Tell us what your facility actually does so we can assess the applicable requirements.

Registration, renewal and annual coverage

Initial registration establishes a new facility record. Existing registrations require biennial renewal between October 1 and December 31 of even-numbered years. The current window is October 1–December 31, 2026. FDA considers registrations expired if they are not renewed by December 31, 2026. Annual paid US Agent coverage is a separate service agreement: paying for coverage does not itself renew the FDA registration. Qualified facilities must also submit their applicable qualified facility attestation during this period.

Information to prepare

Prepare the facility's legal name and physical address, contact and emergency contact details, owner/operator or agent-in-charge details, activities and food categories, parent-company details where applicable, a facility-specific DUNS number and US Agent details for foreign facilities. For renewal, also prepare the existing registration number and authorized access to FDA Industry Systems. Never share your FDA username or password, including with our team. Keep PINs out of enquiries and shipment paperwork; agree an FDA-supported authorization process.

DUNS, UFI and FEI by FDA program

FDA currently recognizes DUNS as the acceptable unique facility identifier (UFI) for food facility registration. The physical address on the DUNS record must match the facility registration. Cosmetic facility registration uses FEI. FEI does not replace DUNS across all FDA programs.

We first establish whether you need initial registration, renewal or an agent transfer. With your authorization, we review facility information and the DUNS/address match, then coordinate submission through FDA Industry Systems and the required US Agent confirmation. Timing depends on complete information, account access and FDA validation. We do not guarantee processing times or import clearance.

Fees and US Agent coverage

The catalog price for initial food facility registration with US Agent Year 1 is $349. Food facility renewal with US Agent transfer is listed at $349. These are FDABridge professional service charges. FDA charges no government registration or renewal fee, and facilities may file directly with FDA. Confirm the renewal/transfer scope, agent coverage term and subsequent annual charges in writing before paying. DUNS acquisition, label review and Prior Notice are separate services.

Limitations and separate obligations

FDA does not issue food registration certificates. Registration is not FDA approval of a facility or product and does not guarantee import clearance. Labeling, food safety, Prior Notice, the importer's FSVP duties and product-specific requirements remain separate. Cosmetic facilities renew every two years from their initial registration date; cosmetic product-listing updates are annual. The food renewal calendar does not apply to cosmetics.

Account access and registration security

If authorized access is available, use your own FDA account to check the record and submit the applicable renewal. A facility can authorize another person; the account holder can create separate subaccounts for additional personnel. These can make submissions; we do not promise read-only accounts. For missing account/PIN details, do not re-register: contact FDA at furls@fda.gov or +1-240-247-8804. If you can log in, follow FDA's PIN-retrieval instructions; no recovery time is guaranteed. Report suspected misuse to FDA. The July 2026 advisory's cancellation/re-registration advice is conditional on a number/PIN shared in error, not a general lost-access recommendation. Food records are confidential; FEI lookup does not verify registration or renewal. Provide an FFR number where needed to the commercial Prior Notice filer; this does not require sharing a username, password or PIN.

Which identifier does food registration require?+

FDA currently recognizes DUNS as the acceptable unique facility identifier (UFI) for food facility registration. The facility address must match the DUNS record. FEI is used in other FDA programs, including cosmetic facility registration; it does not replace DUNS for food registration.

Do I need a DUNS number first?+
