We request the DUNS number
We first check whether the facility already has a DUNS record, then use Dun & Bradstreet's FDA/Import Safety route for a new request. We follow up until the number is confirmed. D&B controls issuance; FDA advises that a request may take up to 45 days.
DUNS number confirmed — prepare the FDA filing
Once the facility record is confirmed, review the other required food-registration information and US Agent confirmation. If you selected the Food Starter Bundle, its FDA filing assistance follows under that separate scope.
Common questions
What is a DUNS number?+
A DUNS (Data Universal Numbering System) number is a 9-digit identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet. FDA uses it to verify the identity and address of foreign food facilities during the registration process.
Do I need a DUNS number before FDA registration?+
In most cases, yes. Foreign food facilities registering through FDA's FURLS system are required to have a DUNS number that matches their facility name and address. Mismatches cause registration delays.
Can I get a DUNS number myself for free?+
Dun & Bradstreet offers free DUNS registration, but we charge $149 for application preparation and follow-up. Dun & Bradstreet controls issuance and timing, so this fee does not buy a faster or guaranteed result.
What if I already have a DUNS number?+
Look up and check the existing D&B record first. A usable facility DUNS may mean you do not need acquisition. If its name or address needs correction, the separate DUNS Information Change service is $99. A DUNS lookup is not an FDA food-registration status check; DUNS, FEI and the FDA food registration number are different identifiers.
Which D&B route should I use, and how long does it take?+
D&B's Import Safety Portal supports worldwide lookup, requests and record updates for FDA use. D&B offers a free number request; FDA says issuance may take up to 45 days. Other D&B routes may publish different estimates. Our $149 covers application assistance and follow-up, not expedited issuance or an FDA fee.
